As business owners, we like to think people make decisions based on price, expertise or the services we offer.
But in reality, first impressions often have a bigger influence than we realise.
Whether it's a networking event, a social media profile, a website or simply meeting someone for the first time, people form opinions remarkably quickly.
I was reminded of this recently while speaking with several business owners. Many conversations started the same way:
"I looked at their website..."
"I checked out their LinkedIn..."
"I saw them at a networking meeting..."
What's interesting is that they rarely talked about technical details. Instead, they talked about how the business made them feel.
Did the business come across as trustworthy?
Did they appear professional?
Did they seem approachable?
Did they feel like someone they could work with?
The reality is that most customers aren't experts in what you do.
A plumber doesn't expect customers to understand boilers.
An accountant doesn't expect customers to understand tax legislation.
A web designer can't expect customers to understand code or SEO.
People look for signals instead and small details create confidence. These can be as simple as:
Simple communication.
A professional appearance.
Consistency.
Being visible.
Showing up regularly.
These are all things that help people feel comfortable taking the next step.
That's one reason networking remains so valuable.
People often decide whether they trust someone long before they understand exactly what that person does.
The same applies online.
Many businesses invest time improving their products or services while overlooking the impression they create.
Yet often the difference between receiving an enquiry and being ignored comes down to trust.
And trust often begins with a first impression.
So here's a simple question:
"When somebody discovers your business for the first time, what impression are they likely to walk away with?"
Because whether we like it or not, people are already deciding.
